Hello, my name is Rosalind, and I’m a binge watcher. I don’t do it all the time, but when I’m bored, or I get into a new series, I can just go for hours and hours. I’ve pushed Netflix to the point where it asks me “Do you want to keep watching?” and I press “yes” and complain that they slowed me down.

I watched all of the Dresden Files in two days. I caught up on every season of Scandal in a month this past summer. I have watched all of Firefly (plus Serenity) in one day, and I just caught myself up on Iron First between Christmas and New Year’s.

However, at least in my case, I find binge watching to be a highly productive game plan. Let me tell you why.

I am a mostly kinesthetic learner, and I’m a little bit ADHD (undiagnosed, but I hit most of the checkmarks – I even use caffeine as a focusing agent not to wake up). Because of this, I have always found that I need background to get anything done. Without something specific to turn to when I lose my focus, I just get lost and have trouble getting back to the task at hand. Sometimes, I just get really bored and slow down or don’t actually finish what I’m working on. As a kid, I did all my homework in front of the television. I didn’t care what was on, as long as it was something that I could be a little bit interested in. Not a lot interested – I didn’t do homework while watching the X-Files, no way! Sitcoms, news, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (my sister loved it, I wanted to punch Buffy most of the time), and cartoons – all good! I got my work done, and no one complained about my methods.

I liked these two … most of the time.

So, move to adulthood. I still have trouble getting things done in silence. Only now – there’s netflix! (and hulu, Amazon, HBO go, etc.). So, I binge watch when I need to get things done. Gotta make breakfast/dinner/dog food? Watch something. Gotta clean? Watch something. Gotta workout? Watch something. Gotta grade papers/write syllabi/update Blackboard? Watch something. Every free minute of my day, I pretty much also have on some streaming television show.

Now, you might say, as my husband does, that I can’t possibly follow what’s going on if I’m doing these other things! Sure, maybe I don’t catch every little detail. But, let me be clear, I’m not any better when I’m not doing something! Being kinesthetic/ADHD, I lose track of most shows/movies/etc. About 20 minutes in EVEN when I’m not doing anything. Sometimes faster. In fact, when I watch my beloved Supernatural, I sit on my computer and take notes (more like a running commentary) just to keep focused. Therefore, this process of doubling up works on every level. I can pay better attention to two things than one – and I get stuff done that I might have otherwise procrastinated away by saying, “I’ll do it while I watch.”

I never quite get to this point.

Does this work for everybody? Definitely not! I know plenty of people who would rather focus on one thing at a time, and do better than way. However, that’s not me, and I know it. In fact, I wrote the majority of my doctoral dissertation on the couch in front of my tv. I know how I work. Streaming just gives me a chance to use that to my advantage. Also, I get to watch a lot of tv shows for being such a busy person! I’m on Defenders now, with Punisher to follow.

What are your favs? What else should I binge while working on stuff?
