If you’re going to be a geek in a country other than the US, it might as well be Singapore. This Asian Island is full of technology and geek culture that is familiar to us Americans, and I’m sure you’ll find some awesome things to check out.

If you visit at the right time of year, you may find yourself surrounded by your kind at one of Singapore’s major conventions. From August 31-September 1, you can check out the Singapore Toy, Game, and Comic Convention where you can find awesome cosplayers and exhibitors as well as plenty of Asian pop culture stars. If anime is more your style, be sure to visit during November 9-11 and check out Anime Fest Asia at the Singapore Expo. For you creative types, the 2013 Singapore Mini Maker Faire occurred this past July, so you’ve got plenty of time to plan for 2014.

Don’t worry if you want to check out Singapore during a different time of year, though. There’s plenty to see all the time. If you’re an animal lover, be sure to visit the Singapore Zoo, which is huge and has natural boundaries instead of cages for its animals. Also, you need to see the Sea Aquarium where they have a shipwreck and over 200 sharks, which have definitely been on your mind this week.

Real outdoorsy types will love the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, where you will see plenty of bird species and gorgeous mangroves. And if you like flora and foliage, be sure to visit the Gardens by the Bay.

More of an indoor geek? Check out Sim Lim Tower for all your techie needs and some shopping geek style. For more shopping, you need to see Funan Digitalife Mall, an IT shopping mall. Hackerspace Singapore is a great place for smaller geek events and to meet some of the locals. And if you are really into pop culture you can’t leave without a trip to Universal Studios Singapore, which has Transformers: The Ride and a humans vs. cylons dueling coaster.
