There’s an awfully lot of pretty awesome stuff happening this year, both for us ladies here at Girls Are Geeks, and in the geek community at large. What follows, in no particular order, is a list of things I’m looking forward to this year.
Our family is a little Oz obsessed, as we can recite the entire munchkin scene together from memory. I also adore Wicked, have read the original L. Frank Baum books, and have seen Return to Oz more times than anyone should. The trailers for this movie look pretty awesome, and I’m excited to explore Oz from yet another perspective. Also, James Franco is one of my favorites, so I think he’ll do a young wizard justice.
2. PAX East
I will be heading out again with a group from my school, which should be a blast. I have not yet missed a PAX East. I love meeting the people who I know from blogging and tweeting. I love trying out new games. I love making new friends by standing in line and chatting. Overall, PAX is one of my favorite trips of the year and it will be sad the first time I don’t go.
ALL THE DOCTORS! Well, not quite all, but it should be a fun semi-reunion no matter what happens in the Doctor Who 50th anniversary. How many shows have managed to stick around, on and off, but still around, when they turn 50? Not many. This one is slated for November, so plenty of time to prepare with the current season and maybe catching some of the old, old stuff on Netflix.
Okay, so technically New Fantasyland in Walt Disney World opened in December, but I won’t get to see it until February, so I’m counting it here. In fact, there are always pieces that are a little behind the times, so I’ll probably see a more complete version this year anyway. There are new rides, shows, and a bunch of new castles, along with the new restaurant Be Our Guest where you can try the gray stuff – I hear it’s delicious!
5. Visiting California
As I may have mentioned, Gardella is getting married and the family gets a huge trip to California in the process! This is awesome on multiple accounts. We are probably going to at least one day of California Extreme which is full of old arcade and pinball machines. We’ll be checking out Disneyland, which I’ve never been to before. We may even make it to ComicCon, or at least be hanging around San Diego when it happens. Also, California means wine, and we are definitely wine geeks around here!
I’ve seen TMBG in concert 4-5 times now, twice in one week in the fall of 2011, but they are still a great an fabulous band. Plus, they always have something new and different happening. We’ll be hopefully checking them out at the beginning of March in Rochester. I’m ready for some Johns, an accordion, and a bass clarinet. Are you?
7. Avenger Universe
It’s a good year to be an Avenger. We’ve got Iron Man 3 in May and Thor: The Dark World in November. We’ve got work being done on the new S.H.I.E.L.D. series for television with events taking place after the Avengers movie. I’m extremely excited about both movies, and looking even further ahead, for Captain America: The Winter Soldier. There’s also some hope of perhaps getting some of the X-Men to cameo, so I’m planning to keep an eye out for that.
This new game from Disney looks like an incredible amount of fun. It will mix Disney characters from many areas including live action, classic animated, and Pixar. It’s going to have world creation and an open sandbox mode to play around in. I don’t get around to very many games lately, but this I may have to find some time for.
As it has already been mentioned here that we are huge Hobbit fans, it should come as no surprise that we’re pretty darn excited for the second Hobbit movie all the way in December. This should be the movie in which Bilbo matches wits with Smaug in the Lonely Mountain and we will also get to see the Dwarves travel down the river in barrels and meet the human men, including Bard the Bowman of Dale. Just don’t forget: Stand by the gray stone when the thrush knocks …
10. New Games!
If there is one thing I can count on, it’s that I’ll learn about some new game that I never heard of before every year. Sometimes even more than one. Therefore, I wanted to leave a slot here open for things that I don’t even know about yet. For games that are still in testing or raising money on kickstarter or even that are still just an idea in someone’s mind. I can’t wait to see what the geek community comes out with in the next year, and I’m sure at least some of it will be awesome!
There it is. The ten things that will keep me going from February through December. What are you looking forward to this year?
