One of the best parts of the Internet is that you put yourself out there, and if you are lucky, you get to chat with people who are into the same crazy, geeky things as you. I’ve been fortunately enough to find a number of those people especially associated with the blogs GeekDad and the relatively new and totally awesome GeekMom. Specifically, the person I want to talk about today is Jenny Williams. Jenny is a geek, a mom, a writer, a homeschooler, a travel enthusiast, and a crafter, and to me, that all makes her a pretty great Geeky Woman Role Model for November!

Jenny herself says that she grew up a geek, essentially from birth, and probably had no choice in the matter! She attributes a lot of this to her mother who played them Star Trek and Star Wars (a biscifi household!) and encouraged intellectual activities. She still has a love for science fiction and fantasy as well as an appreciation for other geeky things like They Might Be Giants. Endearing her to me, she recently discovered the joys of Disney. Finally, she has a self-admitted crush on Wil Wheaton which began as a teenager (whew! I’m not the only one!).

One of the things I really admire about Jenny is that she is not only the mother of two geeks-in-training, but she has chosen to homeschool them. She has written a number of articles on GeekDad and GeekMom about various homeschooling activities, and let me tell you, I kind of wish she was my teacher as a kid! They listened to Ancient Sumerian Music on YouTube, they incorporated lego robotics, and make paper crafts for learning about the solar system. She seems to be able to turn anything into a learning experience and it sounds like her kids have a blast in the process!

Jenny’s major passion other than her kids is writing. She writes on a variety of geeky topics. Jenny loves board games, especially ones that involve logic and strategy skills. Like any good geek, she likes to read, and just wrote a great holiday guide for books. One of her most popular posts is about 10 Ways to a Geeky Girl’s Heart. There she talks about what us geek girls want when we want a romantic relationship: board games, science jokes, and a lot of intelligent creativity!

Overall, Jenny Williams is out there living the geek life, schooling her children in the ways of geek, and helping all of us find new geekiness through her thoughtful blog posts. She mirrors some of my loves: Wil Wheaton, Colin Firth’s Mr. Darcy, and critical thinking. I am always thrilled to see her thoughtful responses to some of my more amusing twitter links. Overall, Jenny Williams is someone who has done what she wants with her life and is successful at it, and that, above all else, makes her an awesome Geeky Woman Role Model!
